Faye Wong is a Chinese singer who has covered some Cocteau Twins songs and had some written for her. She has made albums with a mixture of wonderful ethereal Cocteau Twins like music, and commercial songs that her record company wants her to sing. She is very successful, and is one of the most popular artists in Asia. Faye Wong pages on the web are often either written in Chinese, or concentrate on pictures and biography instead of discography, so it can be hard to find information about the Cocteau Twins related CDs. I have chosen to present the CDs I like the most here, and I use the English translations as found in Josh's Fayevorite Faye Wong Page. FW Random Thinking.jpg (1409 bytes) Random Thinking,  Cinepoly 1994 The first album to contain Cocteau Twins songs: Track 1, Random Thinking, and track 5 Know Oneself And Each Other. Both are covers from Four Calendar Café, Bluebeard respectively Know Who You are at Every Age. Track 3, Pledge, is very pretty too.
decadent.jpg (74318 bytes) Decadent Sound of Faye, Cinepoly 1995 No CT content at all, not even soundwise. This is Faye's tribute to her idol Teresa Teng, a Chinese pop-singer. The melodies are often commercial, but the consequent sound and feel to this album makes it a glowing fayevourite.
didar.jpg (5906 bytes) Di-Dar,      Cinepoly 1995 A lot of brilliant songs. Track 1, Di-Dar, is beautifully sung, track 2, Vacation, is absolutely stunning. Track 3, Lost track, reminds me of Bjork's Bachelorette musically. Track 6, I think, is melodious, track 9, (Untitled), is catchy and 10, Comet, is beautiful.
impat.jpg (4148 bytes) Impatience, Cinepoly 1996 Track 4, Fracture, and track 8, Repressing Happiness, were written by the Cocteau Twins for Faye and this album. CT later "covered" the songs as Tranquil eye and Touch upon Touch. Faye Wong wrote seven of the songs on this album. Every track is divine.
smallmilk.jpg (1265 bytes) Milk & kisses fontana 1996 Faye Wong sings a duet with Elizabeth Fraser on Serpentskirt on the Asian release of Milk & Kisses! This is the ultimate music to me. To hear those two voices in the same brilliant song... If only they could make a whole album together.
toy.jpg (4682 bytes) Toy,           Cinepoly 1997 Only five tracks and the first five listens or so, I found them very commercial and I was disappointed. But now I like the EP a lot. Track 1, Undercurrent, appeals to everyone, and track 3, Merely Appease, is almost Portishead like.
helpyourself.jpg (6207 bytes) Help Yourself, Cinepoly 1997 Three new songs and three remixes of old ones. Not really worth the money, but track 2, Guardian Angel, and track 3, Help Yourself, have that glorious Faye Wong ethereal sound that I can not resist.
fayewong.jpg (2116 bytes) Faye Wong,     EMI 1997 The pictures are two of the numerous covers of Faye Wong. When browsing the webshops, look for any of those two (the others are limited editions so you are not likely to see them in a regular shop). They have the same tracklists. Track 4, Amusement Park is a song written for Faye by the Cocteau Twins and is not available anywhere else. Track 8, Nostalgia is a guitar cover of the Twinlights version of Rilkean Heart. Track 2, You're Happy, So I'm Happy, is cute and original, an all time fayevourite of mine. Track 3, Bored, is Chinese rock, fast and fun.

Fayewo2.jpg (1743 bytes) Sing and Play,    EMI 1998 Sing and Play has an alternative feel to it, with track 7, Little Smart,  having  the Calfskin Smack Ooh lalalalas in it. Track 1, 2, 7 and 10 were written by Faye. Packaging is beautiful, and most songs are lovely, but they never reach the "Impatience standard".
FW_onlylovestrangers.jpg (5728 bytes) Only Love Strangers,         EMI 1999 The Cocteau sound is completely vanished, this album is different, amazing in its own way. Rock, fun, cute and cool songs. Track 10, Spectacular,  the lone Faye composition and a Pepsi-commercial, is a fast dance track. Album comes with a free VCD.
fw_collection.jpg (5509 bytes) Emotional Life, Cinepoly 1999 Since Faye went to EMI, Cinepoly has put out numerous compilations to make money. This is my recommendation, one live, one studio disc. Both 4CC covers (live), and almost every nice song from the albums before Di-Dar. Learn more here.
VCD is a kind of cheaper DVD format. It can be used with a proper VCD-player (with karaoke functions), or play them in your own computer, in the Mpeg2-player. This is a nice way for non-Asians to finally see Faye's promotional videoclips! Below are my fayevourites:
vcdpink.jpg (68438 bytes) Faye's Willing, Cinepoly 1996 1. Decadence, 2. Lost Track, 3. Vacation, 4. Brink Of Love and Pain, 5. I'm Willing, 6. Sky Like Earth, 7. Because of Him, 8. Chesspiece, 9. Like Wind, 10. No Regrets, 11. Summer Of Love, 12. Sky
vcdblue.jpg (58582 bytes) Faye Swears, Cinepoly1996 1. Sporadic, 2. Scandalous, 3. Impatience, 4. 100 Words - 1000 Phrases, 5. Di-Dar, 6. Dream Lover, 7. Comet (latin mix), 8. Fragile Woman, 9. Pledge, 10. Flow Not Fly, 11. Wish We Will Last Forever, 12. Know Oneself In Understanding Others
mykaraoke.jpg (45440 bytes) Faye My Karaoke, EMI 1999 1. Give Up Halfway, 2, You're Happy, So I'm Happy, 3. Bored, 4. Sex Commandments, 5. I Don't Want To Be This Way Either, 6. Face, 7. Anesthesia 8. Emotional Life, 9. Mortal World, 10. Red Bean, 11. Can't Wake Up, 12. Fly 13. Little Smart
I adore Faye Wong, her voice is just as wondrous as Elizabeth Fraser's, and she's got that certain something that makes everything charming, even some of the horrible ballads. But I wish that she would make an Impatience like album again. Sadly it seems she has now abandoned the Cocteau sound, but she remains a favourite of mine. e-mail me Back To Atlas
