Bobby Byrd - I Know You Got Soul (213 K)
This song was used on 'I Know You Got Soul' by Eric B & Rakim and 'Fight the Power' by Public Enemy.
Deodato - September 13th (211 K)
I have the drums from this song on the drum loop page too, but this part has piano as well, and was used on 'Park Joint' by Camp Lo.
Lou Donaldson - Peepin' (213 K)
From the same LP as 'Ode To Billie Joe', with a similar drum line. Used by The Wiseguys on 'The Sound You Hear'. (This is the British Wiseguys, not the American.)
Herbie Hancock - Bring Down The Birds (153 K)
This Herbie Hancock tune is from the soundtrack of Blow Up, the great British/Italian sixties movie. It is the base for 'Groove Is In The Heart' by Dee-Lite, a great song.
Isaac Hayes - Buns O' Plenty (111 K)
From the soundtrack of the 1974 film 'Three Tough Guys', starring Isaac Hayes himself. I haven't seen the film in question, but the pictures on the record sleeve look fine. The intro of this song has been used by DJ Premier on KRS-ONE's 'Wannabemceez'. Someone else has used another part of the song, but I can't remember who.
Syl Johnson - Could I Be Fallin' In Love (145 K)
from the excellent LP 'Diamond In The Rough'. The intro is looped on Raekwon's 'Heaven Or Hell'.
Maceo & The Macks - Parrty (94 K)
Maceo & The Macks are sort of the same people as The JB's, i.e., Fred Wesley, Maceo Parker etc. This song was written by James Brown, who also sings on it. Used by Gang Starr on 'Who's Gonna Take The Weight'. (Check out this snippet too (315 K).
Mandrill - Two Sisters Of Mystery (238 K)
Once upon a time Public Enemy was the best hip hop band in the world. This is just one example of their genius. The first two bars of this song are looped on 'By The Time I Get To Arizona', though they use it at -8. I was quite amazed when I bought the Mandrill LP and listened to this song.
Mohawks - The Champ (373 K)
This is a well known sound, although the source might not be so well known -- if you have listened to hip hop for a while you must have heard it. It was used on KRS-ONE's 'KRS-ONE Attacks' and 'Step Into A World', on Eric B & Rakim's 'Eric B Is President' and on Rakim's 'The Saga Begins' to mention only a few. I got this loop from James Coles. Thanks!
Jean Jacques Perrey - E.V.A. (340 K)
An old french jazz-funk-moog-popcorn-sort of song that Premier sampled on Gang Starr's 'Just To Get A Rep'.
Lalo Schifrin - Danube Incident (238 K)
This is from the TV show Mission Impossible and can be found on the album 'More Mission Impossible' from 1969. It was sampled on Portishead's 'Sour Times'.
Marlena Shaw - California Soul (275 K)
This is a very good song, from the same album as 'Woman Of The Ghetto'.
It has been used on Gang Starr's 'Check The Technique' and on The Wiseguys 'The Sound You Hear'. They also used this part (120 K) from the first verse. (By the way, note that Blueboy used the live version of 'Woman Of The Ghetto' for 'Remember Me' and not the studio version I mentioned here.)
Jimmy Smith - Root Down (And Get It) (213 K)
Beastie Boys used this song on 'Root Down'. The bass line and the
drums, the
wah wah guitar (111 K), and
the organ
break (213 K) all come from this song.
Lonnie Liston Smith - Expansions (338 K)
This bass line was used by Stetsasonic on 'Talkin All That Jazz'. I don't think they actually sampled the song, but played it themselves on a synth.
Jeremy Steig - Howling For Judy (99 K)
Awesome flute loop by jazz man Jeremy Steig. Used by Beastie Boys on 'Sure Shot' from Ill Communication.
Charles Wright & The Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band - Express Yourself (247 K)
This was sampled on (you guessed it) 'Express Yourself' by NWA. As some people pointed out, Charles Wright was actually the father of Eazy E from NWA.
