FAQ
Some questions you don't have to ask anymore (unless you want a better answer):
Do you have a sample of song X by artist Y?
That is a frequently asked question. This site is not gonna be updated any more though.
I like the sample X. Do you have the whole song in MP3 format?
No, but I do own the record it was sampled from (with one exception -- The Champ). I won't start uploading whole songs though. That's illegal. Also, it takes too much time - and that's time I don't have. And finally, I think you should buy the record if want the song. I totally share the view of the creator of the excellent Sample FAQ. This is a quote from his faq:
I only provide sound samples because it helps people to critically review and comment on the art that sampling represents. I'm trying to give people a taste of the original, not a free ride. If you want to hear the whole song, dig it up! Obviously it is a copyright violation to post the whole song, and the recording industry has even been known to sue over obvious "fair use" cases. Lastly, this music is largely forgotten by the masses, I don't want to hurt the business side of it anymore than you do. So if you like that tune, tell somebody to re-release it! In short, don't expect to ever find full-length high-quality songs on any site I produce. I'm not even trying to make a repository for lazy crate-diggers.
What's up with the sound quality?
Most of the samples on this site were made before MP3 came out. Imagine that. I am getting old... This means in 1996-97 or so. Later on when it did come out, my Macintosh 68k was too slow to encode it, so I made WAV's instead. This is what I wrote earlier:
All new samples I make are 16 bits resampled down to 22050 Hz in order to save disk space and download time. I don't think it matters too much. I won't do 44kHz samples, and I will probably stick to .WAV files, since that's the standard. Anyway, if you really want to use a loop for a song, why not try to find the record? It's more fun, you can have it in any quality you like, you can scratch it, and you may want to sample some other bits instead. Also, see the answer to the above question.
Do you know where the drum loop/bass loop/etc in this or that song comes from?
Maybe, but probably not. You should always start your quest by visiting The-breaks.com (formerly Sample FAQ) before looking any further. That site is the best place for such things that you have any chance of finding.
I'm a rapper. Do you have any music industry connections to help me get a recording contract?
No. Wish I had.
Send me some cool samples by email.
No. I think I already provided you with some cool samples.
When will you update with new loops?
Never. This site isn't updated anymore. Sorry.
Why are all the examples of where these songs have been sampled so old?
I haven't changed much since the first time I added each sample, so much may have happened since that time. Also, sad but true: I don't follow new hip hop as well as before. Hrmf.
I want to use sample X in one of my songs. Is that OK?
Don't ask me. I have no idea how to clear samples. All the featured songs are copyrighted by their owners, and you need permission to use them in any way. Here is a FAQ you may want to read.
