Guide how to use Rötter and Anbytarforum home page

This excellent guide how to use Rötter, the site of the Federation of Swedish Genealogical Societies, is written by my friend in Australia, Saga Christina Ask Troy

You can access the Rötter home page on this URL:
Släktforskarförbundets tidning rötter

Instructions
To the oldies who know how to use Rötter, my apologies. To the beginners who would like to try it out, here are the instructions:

Scroll down to the bottom of the left-hand side of the page where the table of contents is. At the bottom in the green box labelled 'Sök i hela Rötter' enter your keyword then click the button marked 'Sök'.

Now remember that you can only search for one word - no word strings or phrases. It will bring up a list of articles, postings, etc with reference to that word. It also gives them a star rating for relevance and arranges them from the most relevant to the least relevant. Click on the blue heading to read the article/posting and use your back button to return to the list. Easy really. But it is spelling specific so, if you were looking for the name DeTrij that is the only spelling it would list, not the other variations such as DeTry. If you search for something really common, like Andersson, you will get an enormous list to search through.

You can access the Rötter/Anbytarforum on this URL:

Instructions
On the Rötter Anbytarforum you can search for word strings and phrases but it is much more complicated to use. On the left-hand side of the page is a little menu with several choices to click on:

  • Ämnen = topics
  • Senaste dygn = new messages within the last 24 hours
  • Senaste vecka = new messages within the last week
  • Trädstruktur = all messages shown in a tree structure (I can't get this one to work)

As I check all postings every day I click on Senaste Dygn. You also have
the choice to go directly into a subject on the right-hand side of the
page:

Redaktören meddelar = Messages from the Editor
Discussions in English
Landskap = Provinces, subdivisions for every parish
Länder = Other Countries
Släkter = Clans (name whose bearers can trace back to common ancestor)
Yrken = Professions
Etniska grupper = Ethnic Groups (e.g. Walloons, Gypsies)
Kändisars härstamning = Ancestry of Public Figures (film stars, etc.)
Medeltiden = Middle Ages
Kunglig genealogi = Royal Genealogy
Personnamn = questions relating to names (Is it Swedish?)
Källor = Discussions about resources such as Church Books, CD's
Datorprogram = Computer programs relating to genealogy
Ordet är fritt! = Open section for discussion of genealogy
Bildgåtan = Here you can post a photo or text you cannot decipher
Länktips = Post URL's you want to share here - Genealogy only!
Pröva att skicka inlägg = Test messages

So click on whatever section you want and then you can read all messages posted there.

How to submit a query:
At the bottom of the discussion you wish to take part in, there is a button that says "Nytt meddelande". Click on this, and then enter whatever details you wish in the big window labelled "Lägg till ett meddelande". In the small box labelled "Användarnamn" write your first and last name. Skip the box labelled "Lösenord:"; this is only used by financial members who have a password. In the small box labelled "E-post:" write your e-mail address. When you are done, click on "Förhandsgranska meddelande" (proofread message) and your message will appear as it will when submitted. 1) If this looks OK, click on "Skicka meddelande" (submit message). 2) If you wish to change anything, scroll down to the next window, which contains your text, and edit it. Then click on "förhandsgranska" again and then on "skicka meddelande".

(I find you may have to wait up to 2-3 minutes before you are taken back to the message board. If it was successful, you will see your message posted there at the bottom of the discussion. I think what happens a lot when people have trouble posting their messages is that they hit their 'Back' button or move on to another URL BEFORE their posting is completed. You must wait until the program takes you to your message on the message board.)

Then use your web browser's back button to return to the main topic page.

If there is no suitable heading in the section you are in you can start a new heading. You will see a box marked 'Skapa Ny Discussion' at the bottom of the section, click on this button. There is a box labelled 'Skriv en rubrik för den nya diskussionen:' where you must write a heading for your new section. Then proceed as above in the box labelled 'Lägg till ett meddelande'.
