Medevi Brunn, part 1

Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 , G.C.E. anniversary celebration

Medevi Brunn is the first spa in Sweden, founded in the 25th of July 1678. The buildings of the spa of Medevi have got the status of historic buildings. Eight to nine buildings dates from the time of the foundation and over twenty buildings can be dated back to the 18th century and finally about fourteen buildings can be dated back to the 19th century. Only about ten buildings are from the 20th century. The last element in the name 'Medevi' is 'vi' and that means that it probably was a holy place of sacrifice here in prehistoric times.

During the Middle Ages, Vadstena Monastery was the owner of Medevi. The councillor Gustaf Soop at Stjernsund Palace became the owner of Medevi Manor in 1674. By a chance a farmer discovered the remains of an old spring and in the 25th of July 1678, Urban Hjärne who was an authority on spa, confirmed that the spring water was of the best quality.

Besides that the well off aristocracy visited the spa, it was decided from the very beginning that the spa should be accessible also for ordinary people, the poor and disabled people. There was a hospital in the 18th century in Medevi. King Karl XIV Johan decided that a general hospital should be established in Medevi and that hospital was inaugurated in 1820.
