Why soft air guns?

A soft air gun is a weapon that lies somewhere between a replica gun and a paintball weapon. Itīs got the looks of the real thing but can act as a paintball gun or as a simple recreational airgun that you can play with shooting old tin cans or whatever. If there is some specific type of gun you want usually there is airsoft replicamodel for you. Almost every gun you can think of is available as an soft air gun.
m134.jpg (21028 bytes) This particular gun is made by the japanese company TOP. The price at Tokyo model company is 360 000 yen. I have managed to lay my hands on a wav file how it sounds when firing.

The main difference between an airgun/painball is that an soft air gun uses a electric motor to work up the airpressure in the chamber so a round can be released. Doing so you can get almost any firing rates you want, in most cases about 14-17 round/second fully automatic or semi automatic. The muzzle velocity is about 250-350fps, but this can be trimmed up if you change springs, valves and bores you increase muzzle velocity and power, of course this can effect the gun negative.
You load the gun just as the real thing, with magazines, in these you can get up to 600 rounds/magazine because of the small BB caliber which is 6mm.

The only setback with these guns are that they are constructed in ABS-resin plastic, durable but its still plastic which makes them a bit fragile. Moving  parts wear down easy to. But they are definitely durable enough to play skirmish games with. There are some manfacturers producing guns in zinc alloy metal but they are expensive (Shoei produces a MP44 in metal).

What is HopUp?
(by Blake)

Simply put, a Hop-Up system increases the range of an Airsoft gun. It does so by imparting a backspin on the pellet as it leaves the chamber area and starts down the barrel. Since Airsoft guns use solid plastic pellets of a small caliber (6mm), the backspin has a much greater effect than on them that it would on a paintball (which has a liquid which would resist spinning). The result is that the airflow around the pellet is such that it generates a small amount of lift. If the rate of spin is adjusted for the weight and velocity of the pellet, the result is that the lift works against gravity to keep the pellet in the air longer. The result is a straighter trajectory and longer range. In fact, some systems can keep a pellet flying in an almost straight line for 50 yards (the pellet will tend to rise slightly and then drop sharply to the ground).

Most new Airsoft guns have some kind of Hop-Up system. On the battery powered full-autos made by Tokyo Marui, the Hop-Up system is adjustable for different pellet weights, the pellet weight kan make big difference to range and accuracy.
