I have been using SAT (Sprite Animation Toolkit) byIngemar Ragnemalm for all the animation. In fact this game is based on one of the demo's included in the SAT Package. The best things in life are free. That goes for the SAT-library as well. If you are a programmer you must check it out.
For handling menu's, windows and such, I've been using the TranSkel library by Paul DuBois. Just like SAT: it's great and it's free.
