Tarot of the Goddess - The Great Mother

The Empress represents the fertile Mother Goddess, who was worshipped all over the ancient world. She is linked with the Full Moon, and just like the Moon her belly grows and gives life. She is the Life Force itself, she is Mother Earth. The Earth is her body, her limbs the highlands and valleys, the mountains are her breasts, and the waters of birth flowing from her womb - the Water of Life - makes up the lakes and the seas. From Her are we all born, and to Her shall we all return. The Great Mother is not the forms of nature, but the underlying principle of life. All the Great Goddesses represent a full picture of the Universal Power. She is Mother, the Benign, and Mother, the Terrible. She creates and nourishes and she kills and destroys. By her magic we see good and bad, but in reality there is neither.
