It´s not very trendy to be called Spice at the moment, but then Spiritual Beggars have never
been that trendy and Spice was playing music long before five girls were ever manufactured.
They can even play blinding live shows that have the audience enthralled by the music (Dynamo´96)
and not by their dance routines and high kicks! Sure the word ´high´can be associated with their
music but that´s where it all ends!
Spiritual Beggars are throwbacks from the Deep Purple and Mountin era, when music was played for
pure love of it rather than for it´s commercial value. The band actually started life as a "get
together and jam" kind of band, put together by Michael Amott (ex-Carcass) and some friends in
late 1992. Michael felt the need to start a side project that would enable him and other musicians
to play music without the boundaries and rules of a certain genre. Having already produced two previous
albums, Spiritual Beggars return with their third studio album "Mantra III". Recorded at Studio Fredman
in Gothenburg and produced by Fredrik Nordström (At The Gate, Arch Enemy, Candlemass), ´Mantra III´ sees
the band´s love affair with 60/70´s `Heavy, Riff-Based, Psychedelia´growing deeper and more intense.
Green Day fans beware!
`Mantra III´is a numerlologists dream. It is so called due to the fact that it is their third album, there
are three members of the band, and all of the songs on the album were written over a three year period.
It is the culmination of these facts that makes `Mantra III´very diverse; three years of being inspired
by new music releases and new bands, three different peoples influences, and a band who are three years
older and wiser. All in all Spiritual Beggars have created a much more heavier and mature album.
Upon listening to `mantra III´you will be captivated by the variety of instruments used to secure the retro
sounds of the 70´s, these have been provided by two of their friends who appear on the album as guest
musicians; Per Wiberg - Organ, Mellotron etc..., and Stefan Isebring - Percussion. This change will also
be evident in the new live show, as both Stefan and Per will be part of the touring party which will start
in the UK in february 1998.
